When making custody decisions, your child's welfare will be the court's guiding principle. As the parent, this means you have a good chance of getting custody if you can prove that you are the better parent. The proof doesn't start during the court hearing; it should and will comprise of things that you have been doing from the moment the child was born.

If you are headed for a custody hearing, you may not be able to change the past, but you can improve your odds by taking these measures:

Attend All School Activities

Everyone knows that education is one of the best gifts you can give your kids. Therefore, the courts will need to see that you have been involved in your child's education. This involves things like attending parent-teacher-meetings, attending school plays, paying the necessary school fees and interacting with your child's teachers. Of course, you should be able to prove these things, which means you should keep their records too.

Show Interest in Your Child Health

The parent who takes care of their kid's health, and can prove it, holds an edge over the other parent. Therefore, take the child to the dentist, see to it that they brush and floss daily, and see to it that they get healthy meals. Every parent would want to do those things for their kids, but if you are headed for a custody battle, it isn't just enough to do them – you should be able to offer proof too.

Show Interest In Hobbies And Social Life

That old saying about all work and no play is true for children as it is for adults. Your child needs to enjoy their favorite hobbies, play with their toys, and go on vacations. The child will enjoy these social or leisure interactions, and they will also help the child develop into an all – rounded adult.

Get Your Child To Socialize With Other Family Members

Kids need to learn the value of family relations and interactions. Your child's grandparents, uncles, nieces, and aunts also have a role to play in their life. Therefore, get your child involves in family gatherings or just take them to visit these relatives once in a while. Don't forget to take pictures that you can later use to prove these family interactions.

Child custody issues are some of the most controversial matters that come before family courts. This isn't an issue to take lightly; prepare for battle by talking to a custody lawyer as early as possible.
